B-PAD FOR FIRE/EMS PROMOTIONS

HOW B-PAD WORKS
Fire / EMS Candidates watch B-PAD behavioral video test scenarios and respond.

Candidates watch a series of professionally acted and produced video simulations, then respond verbally as if they were at the scene, deciding what the problem is, what strategy to use to solve it, and how to communicate with the characters in the video. Their responses are videotaped, and scored using validated criteria. The result: a standardized, defensible test costing far less time and money than oral boards or assessment centers.

Small to medium-sized agencies: Order B-PAD for Fire/EMS on our cost-effective Rental Plan.

B-PAD FOR FIRE/EMS
What is B-PAD for Fire/EMS?
B-PAD is a video test: a structured, valid and fair method for observing and assessing interpersonal skills and judgment under standardized testing conditions. B-PAD is not a test of knowledge; rather it is a test of the candidate's competence in dealing with different types of people in different situations.

Who uses B-PAD?
Agencies practicing community-oriented public safety who demand that their candidates have strong people skills. Over 300 agencies in the U.S. and Canada now use B-PAD as part of their applicant screening protocols. Our ongoing research continues to demonstrate B-PAD's high validity, high reliability, and absence of adverse impact on women and minorities.

When should we use B-PAD?
B-PAD is most often administered after written tests and before oral boards and background investigations. Faster and more reliable than oral interviews, B-PAD can save thousands of dollars by screening out a large percentage of candidates who would otherwise fail background investigations, psychological exams, and probation.

What's included?
The rental option lets the agency administer the test once, and forward candidates' test tapes to B-PAD for scoring. Cost is a low one-time setup and per-candidate fee, making the B-PAD rental option especially suited for small- to medium-sized agencies. See our Rental Information for details.
The lease option includes alternate test versions, each consisting of eight video scenarios, and can be used as often as you wish for no additional fees. A day of on-site rater training and manuals for assessors and test administrators is required. Training covers the use of the validated B-PAD scoring criteria and concludes with a rater proficiency exam. Test administration procedures and consultation on cut scores are also included.
Prices vary according to agency size; see our Prices for details.

HOW B-PAD WORKS
Fire promotional candidates watch B-PAD video-based behavioral testing scenarios and respond.

Candidates watch a series of professionally acted and produced video simulations of difficult situations supervisors of all ranks may face. Candidates respond verbally as if they were actually interacting with the characters in the video, deciding what the problem is, what strategy to use to solve it, and how to communicate. Their responses are videotaped, and scored using validated criteria. The result: a standardized, defensible test costing far less time and money than oral boards or assessment centers.

When should we use B-PAD?
B-PAD is most often administered in conjunction with other assessment exercises such as written knowledge tests and tactical simulations. B-PAD provides a method for assessing the interpersonal skills supervisors and managers must have to work effectively with subordinates and coworkers. The scenarios utilized in B-PAD for Police Promotions are non-tactical; they emphasize the sometimes difficult work situations that supervisors most often face.

What's included?
B-PAD for Fire/EMS Promotions is available on the rental option only. Promotional tests are produced to include eight scenarios of your choice, selected from a catalogue tape containing a variety of difficult situations of all ranks may face.
There are three options for scoring promotions candidate results. 1) The B-PAD Group trains agency-designated raters on-site to complete the scoring (similar to our entry-level program); 2) Your agency utilizes raters already trained in the B-PAD scoring, or 3) Completed test tapes are sent to the B-PAD Group for scoring (similar to our entry-level program).
